Before fairy tales were sanitized, they told eternal truths.

Long before modern retellings softened and watered them down, the Brothers Grimm told stories shaped by a deeply Christian imagination. This beautifully illustrated collection of 30 original fairy tales restores their depth, drama, and danger, offering children, families, educators, and even adults a collection of tales that are more thrilling, more meaningful, and far richer than their modern, Disneyfied versions.

About Grimms’ Fairy Tales

This enchanting collection of 30 fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm invites readers into the stories that shaped the moral imagination of generations. Long before modern retellings softened or sanitized them, these tales were told with clarity, wonder, and a deep sense of meaning. The 30 stories in this volume have been carefully selected to include beloved classics most children recognize, such as Cinderella, and Hansel and Gretel, alongside lesser-known gems that preserve their original Christian themes and symbolism, like Bearskin and The Virgin Mary’s Child.

Within these pages, readers will encounter brave heroes, real danger, hard choices, and hard-won redemption. These are fairy tales that take good and evil seriously, delighting the imagination while quietly forming the heart. Far from the watered-down versions popular today, the Brothers Grimm’s original tales are richer, more dangerous, and more rewarding, offering adventure, mystery, and moral depth.

Beautifully illustrated by Abigail Halpin, and edited and introduced by children’s book author and Word on Fire Votive editor Haley Stewart, this volume is designed for children aged 6+, families, educators, and adult readers alike. It is both a captivating read and a lasting treasury, meant to be returned to again and again.

Authors

Jacob Grimm (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859) shared a great love of folktales. Born in what is now Germany, the two scholarly brothers collected hundreds of stories. Their versions of ancient fairy tales preserved these classic stories for future generations.

Editor

Haley Stewart is the editor of Word on Fire Votive, the cohost of The Votive Podcast, and the award-winning author of The Sister Seraphina Mysteries, a series for young readers. Haley and her four children live in Florida.

Illustrator

Abigail Halpin lives, draws, and dreams on the Maine coast. Born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Abigail is a lifelong New Englander and is endlessly influenced by the region’s flora, fauna, and rocky shoreline. Abigail’s illustrations have appeared in middle-grade novels and picture books, including Itzhak: A Boy Who Loved the Violin and Mouseboat.
